“The nature of the injuries appeared consistent with a violent criminal act,” police said Friday.
Following an investigation, the 27-year-old father was charged with one count of aggravated assault and held for a bail hearing, police said.
Sarnia police didn’t provide any additional details about the alleged incident, but did say aggravated assault is the most severe form of assault in Canada under the Criminal Code.
“(The offence) encompasses things like disfiguring, wounding, or endangering life,” police said.
The man, who has been in custody since his initial arrest, returned to court Tuesday, where he was arrested again on nine new charges including four counts of assault, four counts of forcible confinement and one count of mischief, records show.
The name of the father wasn’t released by police as they wanted to protect the identities of the child and the rest of the family, they said. A publication ban has also been ordered in court that protects the child’s identity as they are an alleged victim under age 18.
Sarnia police did not immediately respond Wednesday to a request for an update on the case and the condition of the baby.
The man, wearing orange inmate clothes, appeared in court again Wednesday by video from the Sarnia Jail. His case was adjourned to Friday.
