Benjamin Wasylina has been hiding $10 and $20 bills — money from his summer job staining decks — around the city as a way to engage more followers, but also to create a fun scavenger hunt during the pandemic.
“If you see the video when it’s uploaded, you have to go there as soon as possible because there’s definitely going to be other people on the way quick,” he said, adding that due to the province’s stay-at-home order, his cash videos are currently on hiatus.
In the first video, Wasylina holds a $10 bill and then shows the money underneath a piece of duct tape on a pole in the the Pape Ave. and Dundas St. E. area.
“You have 24 hours,” the video instructs.

That video has had more than 456,000 views since being posted Jan. 12.
The following day, a crisp, folded $20 bill is shown with the CN Tower as the backdrop. Again, the money is attached to a black piece of duct tape, then affixed to a red pole. The video captured 880,000 views.

Later that day, Wasylina hid $10 near Danforth Ave. and Main St. on a metal post at one of the street corners.
“For the first one, it was gone within seven hours,” the 20-year-old Brock University student said. “The other ones, people went to the spots and showed videos that it was gone. They were all gone within the day of.”
Wasylina vows to return once the lockdown regulations, which began on Jan. 14, are lifted and says he’ll choose different areas of the city as hiding places.
He said he prefers giving people smaller amounts rather than, say, $100 in one shot because he has limited funds and “more people will have the satisfaction of finding them. Maybe once a month, you can do $50 or $100 and people will be excited for that.”
“I hope I can do as many of these videos as possible,” he said. “As long as people are interested. And I think it would be cool if it gets big enough, instead of giving away money, it could be something else.”
