Cogeco customers in parts of the Greater Toronto Area and beyond were facing service troubles on Thursday due to potential acts of vandalism.
In a post on social-media site X on Thursday, the television and internet service provider said “vandalism to our fibre optic cables” was to blame for outages in Halton Region — including Acton, Burlington, Oakville, Milton and Georgetown — as well as Elora and Fergus in nearby Centre Wellington.
Our customers in Acton, Burlington, Elora, Fergus, Georgetown, Milton and Oakville may have their services impacted due to vandalism to our fibre optic cables. This includes a complete loss of services or only a loss of TV channels. Our local team is working to restore services…
“Our local team is working to restore services as quickly as possible. Services will begin to restore progressively later this morning and are expecting to be up and running by early afternoon,” the company said on X.
A mid-afternoon follow-up post said “the majority of impacted customers should have their services up and running” as part of plans to restore services progressively.
How many customers were affected was not immediately known.
Halton Regional Police have said that while the incidents were reported, there is no record of any crime occurrences against Cogeco property.
