Liberals in turmoil? MPs break ranks voicing support of Jody Wilson-Raybould

Following ex-justice and veterans affairs minister Jody Wilson-Raybould’s resignation from cabinet Tuesday over allegations she was pressured by the PMO to help SNC-Lavalin avoid criminal prosecution, several Liberal MPs and government officials broke ranks with the Trudeau government and voiced their support for the former Attorney General.

Treasury Board President Jane Philpott praised Wilson-Raybould on Twitter Tuesday night, saying she “taught me so much — particularly about indigenous history, rights and justice.”

Among those who retweeted Philpott’s post was John McCallum, a former Liberal MP who was fired as ambassador to China in January.

Responding to a CP story citing anonymous sources that describe Wilson-Raybould as someone who “was difficult to get along with,” Liberal MP Celina Caesar-Chavannes defended her, calling her “fierce, smart and unapologetic” in a tweet late Sunday night.

Liberal MP Wayne Long, who supported the Conservative and NDP calls for an investigation into the allegations, posted a video message on Tuesday promising his constituents to “… say what I think and I’m always going to do what’s right.”

Long had issued a statement on Monday describing how he was “extremely troubled” by the allegation of attempted political interference by the PMO and why he’s supporting the opposition’s calls for an investigation into the allegations.
