The now 66-year-old man – who cannot be named due to a publication ban protecting the identity of the two girls – entered the new plea in the Ontario Court of Justice at the Sudbury Courthouse.

He will now be sentenced on both charges on April 29.

Sudbury Crown attorney Kara Vakiparta told the court that charges in the two cases were laid 45 and 25 months ago.

“This matter was set for resolution on Feb. 12, the family ready to read victim impact statements,” Vakiparta told Justice Andrew Buttazzoni. “Today, he has pleaded guilty to a second set of charges.

“A joint sentencing submission is coming and does involve custody. I just want you to know how upset the family is and how long this situation has been going on.”

“I appreciate how families and victims often feel, given the length of time these matters can sometimes take to get completed,” said Justice Buttazzoni. “What I can tell the victims in these incidents is the matters are scheduled for April 29 … There will be finality to these matters.”

The sexual interference charge – touching of a female minor with a part of his body (his hand) – that the man pleaded to this week is related incidents that occurred from Aug. 19, 2014, to Jan. 1, 2020, in Wahnapitae and the Municipality of St. Charles.

In an agreed statement of facts, the Crown told the court the young girl participated in sleepovers at her step-grandfather’s home from the ages of five to 11.

The girl would sleep in the basement, sharing a bed with her step-grandfather.

Court heard the man would touch and molest the girl.

The earlier sexual interference charge the man pleaded to in 2022, meanwhile, involved similar behaviour, but with a different girl.
