Warkworth inmate charged in fellow prisoner's January death

Provincial police laid charge April 8 following long investigation into Toronto victim's death

Northumberland OPP have charged an inmate of Warkworth Institution with manslaughter in connection with the death in January of a fellow prisoner.

Police on Jan. 3 were informed of an incident at the medium-security federal prison. It led to an inmate being taken to a nearby hospital and later airlifted to another medical centre, Const. James Clarke wrote in a Thursday news release.

The latter inmate, a 30-year-old from Toronto, later died.

“The name of the deceased shall not be released,” Clarke wrote via e-mail. “This is a victim centered approach and we must consider the family, their wishes and privacy as they deal with the loss of their loved one.”

Following an OPP investigation, officers on April 8 arrested and charged Dylan Roberts, 25, of Loyalist Township.

Roberts was remanded into custody and is to appear in Cobourg’s Ontario Court of Justice. The date was not immediately available.

Northumberland detectives are investigating the case under the direction of the OPP criminal investigation branch.

This investigation is being led by the OPP Northumberland Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.
