A seven-year-old boy is dead and his mother and sister are in hospital in critical condition after a woman in Brazil allegedly sent the new family of her ex-boyfriend poisoned Easter eggs in a “revenge” plot.
Jordelia Pereira Barbosa, 35, is accused of purchasing and spiking the chocolate and sending poisoned treats via courier to the home of Mirian Lira on April 16, the Daily Mail reported.
A note attached with the chocolate eggs was addressed to the 32-year-old mother of two that read: “With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter,” the outlet reported.
Lira shared the eggs with her children, according to local outlets, resulting in the woman’s seven-year-old son, Luis Silva, feeling ill “immediately.”
The boy died in hospital the following day.
Lira and her 13-year-old daughter Evelyn Fernanda are in hospital in critical condition, the Mail reported.
Store security footage obtained by Imperatriz Online allegedly shows Barbosa in a black wig at a grocery store buying the chocolate.
Barbosa bought the chocolate and sent it to the family after an earlier failed premeditated plan, in which she tried to offer Lira candies in a chocolate-tasting session for employees at the supermarket where she worked, officials told the outlet.
She was arrested on April 17 while she was on a bus headed to her hometown of Santa Ines.
Barbosa admitted to cops that she bought the chocolate but denied poisoning the eggs.
Police discovered receipts for the chocolate eggs, two wigs, scissors, cards, a saw knife and suspected drugs in Barbosa’s possession, the Mail reported.
“The evidence suggests, based on several points investigated, that the crime was motivated by revenge and jealousy, given that the author’s ex-husband is the current partner or boyfriend of the victim, who was poisoned along with her two children,” security official Maurício Martins said in a statement.

“There are several indications that clearly point to this woman being the perpetrator of the crime,” he continued.
“The police will continue working to strengthen this evidence and present her to the Judiciary to answer for this barbaric crime.”
An autopsy is being performed on the seven-year-old boy, while blood tests on his mother and sister and lab tests on what’s left of the chocolate is also being carried out.
