Johns Hopkins University was slammed by Martina Navratilova, along with many others, for revising its definition of “lesbian” to instead refer to the group as “non-man attracted to non-men” in an effort to include non-binary people.
“Lesbian was literally the only word in the English language that is not tied to man – as in male – feMALE, man – woMAN. And now lesbians are non men?!? Wtf?!?” she tweeted.
The former tennis star called the revision “pathetic,” adding, “Unreal … another example of erasure of women.”

The inclusive language now part of the university’s diversity and inclusion department’s gender and sexuality resources states that “while past definitions refer to ‘lesbian’ as a woman who is emotionally, romantically and/or sexually attracted to other women, this updated definition includes non-binary people who may also identify with the label.”
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling took issue with the school removing the word “woman” from its guide.
“Man: no definition needed. Non-man (formerly known as woman): a being definable only by reference to the male. An absence, a vacuum where there’s no man-ness,” she tweeted.

The university was also widely criticized for not extending the same updates to “gay men,” who are still referred to as just “men.”

Johns Hopkins has since removed the glossary and issued a statement on how it needs to be better.
“Upon becoming aware of the language in question, we have begun working to determine the origin and context of the glossary’s definitions,” officials wrote. “We have removed the page from our website while we gather more information.
“Johns Hopkins strives to create a campus culture that is inclusive and welcoming for all gender identities, sexual orientations, experiences and viewpoints and we are committed to ensuring Johns Hopkins is a place where LGBTQ people feel supported.”
It likely wasn’t the first time Navratilova’s blood pressure skyrocketed in recent days.
Following transgender cyclist Austin Killips’ decisive win over the weekend, Navratilova took to Twitter to slam the athlete.
“What a joke,” the 18-time grand slam singles winner tweeted about a video of Killips explaining how it was “a gruelling effort” and was “really proud to lay it out there and get the result.”
