WE NEED HARPER
I find myself wondering how much of our current economic mess could have been avoided had we kept the likes of Stephen Harper at the helm of Canada. There would be no carbon tax, there would be pipelines to help our friends and our pocketbook. The government jet would be parked most of the time rather than being away on holiday, or at distant, meaningless, international junkets. I watch, wonder, and weep.

(How different things would be if Harper was still PM. Many Canadians, even those who voted Liberal or NDP miss him)

ONE TAXPAYER
‘Increase health-care transfer payments from Ottawa to the provinces.’ Every time I hear this tired old mantra that Ottawa has a large cache of money stashed somewhere that they won’t spend I am insulted. The idea that the feds have a secret money tree is idiotic. We the people are the money tree and either the government takes more of our money from us to pay for stuff or they borrow or print it and we pay the price. There is only one taxpayer and that is us no matter which level of government takes your money. To add insult to injury, all levels of government cannot run a lemonade stand without 47 regulations and a deficit.

NEEDS A REBOOT
Re “Time for Canada to end monopolies in telecom sector” (Tarek Fatah, July 14): This letter is hard for me to write as it would be for anyone who worked in computer production support and those who still do. Why? We are rolling on the floor laughing out loud. At least he did not say, ‘Pull the plug, plug it back in and reboot (tech humour).’ Here I am retired after 30 years in computer and I did not know my production problems would have been solved by simply splitting up the company as Fatah suggests. Mind you, none of the production failures would ever occur again or they might only impact a smaller group. Suggestion, most companies have what are ‘restore processes.’ By this I mean if the upgrade fails and the previous version was not flawed, that software can be restored. Then the upgrade is once again tested out. What happened at Rogers has happened at every (and I say this without hesitation) company who uses computers and has a computer department. Rogers should be applauded for their honesty and not punished. The government getting involved is just as absurd as Fatah’s suggestion. Ending monopolies does not stop production failures.

NO TO RUSSIAN PLAYERS
Has the NHL gone nuts in signing Russian players with their illegal invasion of a democratic country? I guess there are no players ‘good enough’ to play in the NHL when drawing from any other country in the world. Give me a break! This is morally wrong for sure.
