TRUMPED UP CHARGES

Tuesday marks the start of the trial in an Ottawa court of Tamara Lich and Chris Barber. I would like to remind all Canadians that this trial, expected to last longer than the convoy, should not have been necessary. If our cowardly prime minister and his inept cabinet had not shunned the protesters, it would have been over quickly. Instead, they declared their views “unacceptable” and refused to converse with them. Thus, the politicians provoked the long and peaceful protest, causing the trumped-up charges to be brought.

NO ONE SOARS

Re: “Toronto residents express concern over Air show noise for those with PTSD, pets” (The Canadian Press, Sept. 3): Sigh. It is hard to soar like an eagle when Toronto is full of turkeys.

HOCKEY BOOST FROM GOVERNMENT

The announcement of the new Professional Women’s Hockey League is a welcome
development in the history of the sport so long as its continuity can be guaranteed. Of what use is corporate partnership if these entities contribute nothing financially to the emerging league? The paltry salary range of $35,000 to $80,000 offers little incentive and is not appropriate compensation for the danger and injuries incurred. Governments ought to be contributing until the league’s survival is ensured.

SURROUNDED BY SCOUNDRELS

When I was a kid, my dad used the term scoundrels to refer to people who were not acting right. That term comes back to me as I read news articles. The dictionary describes a scoundrel as “an unprincipled,
dishonorable person; mean, or base in nature; a miscreant.” If my father were alive today, I believe this would be his word choice to describe, in essence, what he would now be reading. It’s very disappointing, and even sad, that the word scoundrel could be used as a description of what others have presented to us after years of working hard to make a decent life for ourselves. And they’re not all elected or appointed.
